When listening to R.E.M.'s cover i didn't know where I am: on 60's California beach or in 80's cold wave studio:) Now i'm listening to my favorites of old: Nada Surf ("always' was oft-aired by French MCM Top when I was living in Warsaw). BTW. Architecture in Helsinki played in Poland recently (Off Festival in Myslowice, you guess who was the host :)
yeah, stereogum has collected some very fine covers there. And I can't wait for Nada Surf's next album; this song is just ace!
